kept
Little boys like to catch things and keep them. Catch a bug, stick it in a jar. Catch a frog, keep it in the bathtub.
Some boys keep doing that even when they’re old.
Guys with a lot of money like to do that. My friend met a really really rich guy at some event for work. He immediately asked her for her card, and the next day he called her. Took her out to an expensive restaurant, and immediately asked her to be his “aijin” (kept woman).
She looked him up that night, and it turns out that he has 30 aijins, puts them up in apartments all around Roppongi and takes care of them so they don’t have to (or aren’t allowed to) work. I’m sure he’s got all sorts. And my friend fit the bill for whatever variety he felt like having that day.
But what happens when they get sick of you? I was a hostess for years and years and of course I got a few offers to be an aijin. And sometimes when times are tough I think to myself, what if I agreed, I wouldn’t be worrying about money right now. But at the end of the day, I wanted to keep my freedom, and I guess I also wanted a chance at finding real love.

Wow, that’s crazy. It does sound tempting, to be honest. But frightening all the same.
